Giosetta Fioroni: Misteriosofico Maeci
Curated by Maria Alicata and Elena Del Drago
On the occasion of the Giornata del contemporaneo / Day of Contemporary Art

Opening 28 September, 7pm

A unique and original character on the Italian art scene, Giosetta Fioroni started her career in Rome during the 60s, when, together with artists such as Mario Schifano, Franco Angeli., Tano Festa, she works towards the renovation of the art landscape of the time.
Those are the years represented in this exhibition, with works on paper, a selection of portraits and landscapes, created from the middle of the 60s to the first half of the 70s with the artist’s signature technique of “smalto di alluminio” (aluminium enamel). The so-called “Argenti” (Silver), ideograms of faces, shapes and landscapes executed with an enamel or industrial paint the colour of aluminium, which are typical of Fioroni’s most celebrated artistic production.
Over the years Giosetta Fioroni has developed a highly original aesthetic, using images from cinema, literature, magazines form the 60s and family portraits. The subjects, mostly females, are captured while looking at something and surrounded by prospective lines which create a frame that focuses the attention on the act of looking itself. The people in the portraits at times evocate some pop icon, but this way, frozen in a silver monochrome, evocate a feeling of suspension.

Giosetta Fioroni (Roma,1932). At the beginning of the 60s she becomes a member of the Scuola di Piazza del Popolo (with Angeli, Mario Schifano, Tano Festa and many more). Around this time she creates the Argenti: ideograms of shapes and landscapes in aluminium enamel on paper and canvas. The artists gravitated around the gallery la Tartaruga, where in 1968 she opens the Teatro delle Mostre with the performance La Spia Ottica. This is the period when she experiments with the videocamera and starts making her “toys for adults”: the Teatrini. In 1970 she takes part to the landmark exhibition Vitalità del negativo, curated by Achille Bonito Oliva at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome. In the 70s she lives in Veneto with her partner, the writer, and here she creates the works inspired by the fairytale by Vladimir Propp. In the 90s at the bottega Gatti in Faenza, she starts a production of ceramics: Teatrini, Case, Steli, Scatole magiche, Formelle, Vestiti. In 2002 and 2012 with Marco Delogu she explores the themes of identity and old age with two projects: Senex e L’Altra Ego. In 2014 she makes a video for fashion house Valentino inspired by the book The Golden Bough, by anthropologist James Frazer. She has constantly collaborated with writers and poets such as Arbasino, Parise, Zanzotto, Marcoaldi, Ceronetti, Trevi, Magrelli, La Capria and many more, on artists’ books and graphic works. Many retrospectives hav been dedicated to her work, including at Palazzo Diamanti in Ferrara, Casa del Mantegna in Mantua, Loggetta Lombardesca in Ravenna, Mercati di Traiano in Rome, Museo MIC in Faenza, Drawing Center in New York, GNAM in Roma, MARCA in Catanzaro, MMOMA in Moscow, Museo del Novecento in Milan.
