The Italian-British Constitutional Conversations are annual seminars where the Devolution Club (the Italian cultural association committed to the promotion of dialogue among public lawyers) and the UKCLA (Association of British Constitutional Lawyers) discuss topical issues on current affairs. The referendum, the UK Supreme Court’s activity, the Italian constitutional reforms, the Scottish devolution, the evolution of European constitutionalism, the Brexit affaire are among the issues of previous Conversations. The 2018 meeting will enjoy the contribution of DPCE, the Italian leading association of comparative public lawyers.
The 13th Conversation will focus on a key issue in the Brexit negotiations: the constitutional implications in the Irish scenario of the likely withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU. Two speakers coming from Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic are asked to survey such implications, namely the problematic one of the border (soft, hard, or what else?) and its impact in the middle of the Irish sea.

Speakers: Gordon Anthony, Professor of Public Law in the School of Law, Queen’s University (Belfast), has held visiting positions at institutions in Greece, Holland, France, Portugal, and the United States. His main research interests are in the areas of judicial review, public authority liability, and the relationship between UK law and European law.
Oran Doyle, Professor and Head of the School of Law in Trinity College (Dublin), is an expert in comparative constitutional law and a regular contributor to public debates on issues of constitutional law in Ireland.
