Cineclub is a new series of Italian films, classic and contemporary, new and old, especially aimed at the under 30 - but open to everybody!
Conceived by Lavinia Bianchi, student of Comparative Literature at UCL, who will try to make Italian cinema more accessible to a wider audience with a range of films introduced by actors, directors, scholars and experts, and followed by discussions with the public.
All films in the series are subtitled
Second episode – A Special Day (Una giornata particolare)
1977, 106’
Starring Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni, Scola’s film is confined in the action of a single day inside a Roman apartment, while a parade commemorates Adolf Hitler’s historic meeting with Italian leader Benito Mussolini. The movie alludes to questions of political and social importance, yet through the prism of a human relationship that develops between two neighbours.
Introduction and post screening discussion with Dr Louis Bayman
Dr Louis Bayman teaches Film at the University of Southampton. His research focuses on popular cinema and Italian studies. he is the author of numerous publications, including the 2014 monograph The Operatic and the Everyday in Postwar Italian Film Melodrama.
