Tra i talenti di sette nazioni spicca il giovanissimo campione europeo di manipolazione Maurice Grange, che trasforma gesti precisi in pura meraviglia. In questa intervista esclusiva concessa a Fattitaliani, Maurice Grange ci racconta come è nata la sua passione per la magia a 14 anni, la sua giornata tipo di 8 ore di allenamento, perché associa il suo stile all’elemento acqua, e i suoi prossimi sogni: uno one-man show e un nuovo atto per i Mondiali FISM 2028. Maurice, sei il campione europeo attuale di manipolazione. Come è nata la tua passione per la magia, e cosa ti ha ispirato a specializzarti in questa disciplina?

La mia passione per la magia è nata quando avevo 14 anni. Un amico mi ha mostrato un trucco con le carte che non funzionava. Quindi il primo trucco di magia che ho visto non è stato davvero un'ispirazione, ma ricordo di aver pensato: serve un gioco di prestigio con le mani, e io ho mani molto irrequiete. Ho iniziato ad allenarmi, e la mia passione per tutto ciò che richiede molta destrezza è cresciuta. Un mago che si è esibito a Supermagic prima mi ha ispirato molto; si chiama Yu Hojin. È un onore ancora più grande esibirsi a Supermagic per me. 

La tua performance combina precisione, eleganza e originalità. Come crei di solito una nuova routine: parti da un'idea tecnica, una storia o un concetto visivo?

Nel mio caso è iniziato con un concetto visivo, poi il costume, e poi è arrivata la storia. Ora a volte creo nell'altro modo. È difficile spiegare come creiamo una nuova routine. Può essere immaginato come un bambino che gioca con un giocattolo: giochiamo e giochiamo finché non troviamo ciò che vogliamo, e poi lo perfezioniamo. Lo alleniamo, lo riscriviamo, lo ripensiamo – non si ferma mai davvero. Tengo un taccuino con me ovunque vada, così quando mi viene un'idea, la scrivo immediatamente. 

Supermagic Elementi celebra i quattro elementi naturali: aria, acqua, fuoco e terra. Quale di questi rappresenta meglio il tuo stile magico, e perché?

La mia magia è acqua, perché spero che scorra attraverso di te. È gentile e sembra morbida, ma può avere molta potenza che sottovalutiamo. Ma è un po' forzato; forse penso che la mia magia sia acqua solo perché mi piace l'acqua.

La manipolazione richiede anni di pratica costante. Puoi raccontarci com'è una tua giornata tipo di allenamento?

Una giornata di allenamento tipica dura otto ore. Subito dopo essermi svegliato, faccio il mio atto. Filmo sempre il mio lavoro e lo analizzo dopo. Poi lavoro sui dettagli, sullo script, o su qualunque cosa pensi abbia bisogno di allenamento. Prima di una competizione, cerco di allenarmi 12 ore al giorno, ma penso che avere una vita personale sia ancora molto importante. Quindi a volte esco a cena con la mia ragazza, vado a teatro o faccio stand-up comedy. 

Sei uno degli artisti più giovani del cartellone di Supermagic. Che sensazione provi a condividere il palco con maghi di fama internazionale?

Sono onorato. Molti di loro sono idoli per me. Cerco di non stare troppo come un fan accanto a loro, ma lo sono. Penso che Supermagic abbia sempre i migliori maghi, quelli che ripensano il modo in cui si fa magia. 

Negli spettacoli dal vivo, il legame con il pubblico è essenziale. Che tipo di emozioni speri di evocare nelle persone che vedono il tuo atto per la prima volta?

Le emozioni che voglio creare possono essere immaginate come diversi piatti in una bella cena: un piatto principale di meraviglia, un piatto di risate, e magari un dessert di malinconia. Ma ogni spettatore ha la sua emozione, il suo modo di mangiare la cena. Io servo solo i piatti. 

Guardando avanti, quali sono i tuoi prossimi obiettivi artistici o sogni: forse nuovi spettacoli, competizioni o collaborazioni creative?

I miei prossimi obiettivi sono passare un bel momento a Roma e far divertire tutti con la mia performance. Dopo, i miei prossimi obiettivi sono creare uno one-man show che combini umorismo, magia e storytelling. Un altro grande obiettivo è creare un nuovo atto per i prossimi FISM (Campionati Mondiali di Magia) nel 2028.

In this exclusive interview with Fattitaliani, Maurice Grange shares how his passion for magic began at age 14, his typical 8-hour training day, why he associates his style with the water element, and his next dreams: a one-man show and a new act for the FISM World Championships 2028. Maurice, you’re the current European Champion of Manipulation. How did your passion for magic begin, and what inspired you to specialize in this particular discipline?

My passion for magic began when I was 14 years old. A friend showed me a card trick that didn’t work. So the first magic trick I ever saw was not really an inspiration, but I remember thinking: that needs sleight of hand, and I have very restless hands. I started training, and my passion for everything that requires a lot of dexterity grew. One magician who performed at Supermagic before also inspired me a lot; his name is Yu Hojin. It is an even bigger honor for me to perform at Supermagic.​

Your performance combines precision, elegance, and originality. How do you usually create a new routine - do you start from a technical idea, a story, or a visual concept?

In my case, it started with a visual concept, then the costume, and then came the story. Now I sometimes create the other way around. It’s difficult to explain how we create a new routine. It can be imagined like a child playing with a toy: we play and play until we find what we want, and then we perfect it. We train it, we rewrite it, we rethink it – it never really stops. I keep a notebook with me everywhere I go, so whenever an idea pops into my head, I write it down immediately.​

Supermagic Elementi celebrates the four natural elements - air, water, fire, and earth. Which of these elements best represents your magic style, and why?

My magic is water, because I hope that it flows through you. It is gentle and seems soft, but it can have a lot of power that we may underestimate. But that’s quite far-fetched; maybe I just think my magic is water because I like water.​

Manipulation requires years of constant practice. Could you tell us what a typical day of training looks like for you?

A typical training day is eight hours long. Directly after waking up, I do my act. I always film my work and analyze it later. Then I work on details, on the script, or on whatever I think needs training. Before a competition, I try to train 12 hours a day, but I think having a personal life is still very important. So sometimes I go out to dinner with my girlfriend, go to the theater, or do some stand-up comedy.​

You are one of the youngest artists in the Supermagic lineup. How does it feel to share the stage with such internationally renowned magicians?

I am honored. Many of them are idols to me. I try not to stand too much like a fan next to them, but I do. I think Supermagic always has the best magicians, the ones who rethink the way magic is done.​

In live performances, the connection with the audience is essential. What kind of emotions do you hope to evoke in people who watch your act for the first time?

The emotions I want to create can be imagined like different plates in a nice dinner: a main plate of wonder, a plate of laughter, and maybe a dessert of melancholic. But every spectator has his own emotion, his own way of eating the dinner. I just serve the plates.​

Looking ahead, what are your next artistic goals or dreams - perhaps new shows, competitions, or creative collaborations?

My next goals are to have a great time in Rome and that everyone has fun with my performance. After that, my next goals are to create a one-man show that combines humor, magic, and storytelling. Another big goal is to create a new act for the next FISM (World Championship of Magic) in 2028.​
