The 22nd edition of the MonteCarlo Film Festival de la Comédie, the only international festival entirely dedicated to comedy, created and chaired by Ezio Greggio, held from November 12 to 15, 2025, in the Principality of Monaco, is pleased to present this year’s seven films in competition, an international selection celebrating the different forms of cinematic storytelling. This year, the event will once again take place at the prestigious Grimaldi Forum in Monte Carlo, where in various halls there will be screenings and meetings with the most beloved protagonists of international cinema from Argentina, Cuba, Algeria, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Spain, and France, culminating with the traditional "Gala degli Awards" evening on Saturday, November 15, at the Grimaldi Forum.
The festival opens with Homo Argentum, a dark comedy by the duo Cohn & Duprat (who were at Monte-Carlo with Official Competition in 2022), composed of 16 stories, all played by the chameleon-like Guillermo Francella, who analyzes with ruthless and precise irony the vices and virtues of a society in constant contradiction. The seven films in competition address many themes of contemporary society, always interpreted with irony or grotesque tones. Among these is the story of two past dictatorships and the dissidents opposing them, trying to overthrow their regimes and the fate of the two countries: one being Francoist Spain in 1939, told in La cena, directed by Manuel Gómez Pereira which accompanies the Film at the Festival; the other is Cuba under the Castro dictatorship told in Comandante Fritz, a romantic comedy set in 1972. Director Pavel Giroud will come to Monte-Carlo to present the film. Then there is food, used in these films almost as a symbol of emancipation: Partir un jour, a romantic comedy with musical elements, and La petite cuisine de Mehdi. Stories of life and relationships unfolding around the kitchen, which is also the protagonist in La cena and Comandante Fritz. With his unique style, between grotesque and hilarious, Anders Thomas Jensen directs Den Sidste Viking (The Last Viking), a dark comedy about two brothers searching for hidden loot after a robbery. Only one knows the coordinates but cannot (or will not?) remember them. They embark on an adventure through their childhood places, hoping to find the treasure and trace back the origins of past traumas.
Family (and the emotional balance that sometimes is hard to find within it) is at the heart of Gianni Di Gregorio’s latest film, Come ti muovi sbagli, presented this year at the Giornate degli Autori in Venice. With delicacy and irony, it tells the story of a seventy-year-old man whose peaceful daily life is completely disrupted by the sudden arrival of his daughter and grandchildren. Iaia Forte, in the role of the woman with whom the protagonist has an almost adolescent flirtation, will be present at the Monte-Carlo Festival to accompany the Film

7 Film in COMPETITION:
LA CENA (106’, Spain) - International Premiere
Directed by Manuel Gómez Pereira. Starring Alberto San Juan, Mario Casas, Asier Etxeandia.
Spain, 1939. Just fifteen days after the end of the Spanish Civil War, General Franco orders a celebratory dinner at the luxurious Hotel Palace in Madrid. A young lieutenant (Mario Casas), a meticulous head waiter (Alberto San Juan), and a group of Republican prisoners—men from the faction opposing Franco's regime but skilled in cooking—are forced to prepare the banquet in record time. Everything seems to proceed smoothly, but the cooks are planning not just the celebration, but also their escape.
COMMANDER FRITZ (106’, Germany/Cuba) - International Premiere
Directed by Pavel Giroud. Starring Yany Prado, Dennis Mojen, Alexis Valdés.
The young Stasi officer from East Germany, Fritz (Dennis Mojen), is sent to Havana in 1972 to oversee the official handover of Isla Ernesto Thälmann, an island gifted by Fidel Castro to the German Democratic Republic as a symbol of socialist friendship during the Cold War. Fritz’s mission is to thwart a rumored CIA assassination attempt on Castro during the ceremony. In Havana, Fritz meets Lola (Yany Prado), a young Cuban woman whose past and choices threaten the mission and will drastically change his life. The film is a political comedy mixing satire and romance, offering a unique view of the historical period and the complex relations between Cuba and East Germany.
PARTIR UN JOUR (98’, France) - Monaco Premiere
Directed by Amélie Bonnin. Starring Juliette Armanet, Bastien Bouillon, François Rollin.
Cécile (Juliette Armanet) made a name for herself as a chef on the TV show Top Chef and is preparing to open a gourmet restaurant with her partner and kitchen assistant. But after her father’s (François Rollin) heart attack, she is forced to leave Paris temporarily and return to her childhood village and her parents’ street food restaurant. During her stay, she meets Raphaël (Bastien Bouillon), her childhood love, who will challenge her certainties.
THE LAST VIKING (116’, Denmark) - French Premiere
Directed by Anders Thomas Jensen. Starring Mads Mikkelsen.
The Last Viking is an original, intriguing, and mischievous comedy about identity. Anker has been released from prison after a fifteen-year robbery sentence. The loot was buried by Manfred (Mads Mikkelsen), Anker’s brother, who alone knows the coordinates. Unfortunately, Manfred has developed a mental disorder causing him to forget everything. Together, the brothers embark on an unexpected journey to find the money and discover who they truly are.
LA PETITE CUISINE DE MEHDI (104’, France/Algeria) - French Premiere
Directed by Amine Adjina. Starring Younès Boucif, Clara Bretheau, Hiam Abbass.
Mehdi (Younès Boucif) is on the edge. He tries to maintain the facade of the perfect Algerian son in front of his mother, Fatima (Hiam Abbass), but hides his relationship with Léa and his passion for French gastronomy from everyone. He works as a chef in a bistro he plans to take over with his partner, but Léa (Clara Bretheau) is tired of his secrets and demands to meet her mother-in-law, traditional and stubborn, whom Mehdi had led to believe still lives in Algeria. Cornered, Mehdi must make a drastic decision, probably the worst possible. The film ironically and emotionally tells the conflict between identity, belonging, and desire for freedom, using cooking as a cultural metaphor and battlefield between Algerian tradition and French modernity.
HOMO ARGENTUM (98’, Argentina) - French Premiere
Directed by Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat. Starring Guillermo Francella, Aurora Quattrocchi.
Homo Argentum presents a collection of 16 satirical stories, all acted by Guillermo Francella. Each character highlights a type of tension: sophisticated opportunism, middle-class double morality, soccer idolization, consumerist aspiration, humor in chaos, exaggerated political correctness, marijuana culture, mafia-like friendships, or the art of playing the fool. There is no redemption or moral: only humor and discomfort, but also tenderness and sharp, inevitable irony. Francella transforms in each scene like an Argentine social chameleon, embodying what we see every day but prefer not to look at twice. With every change of skin, a recognizable, ambiguous, affectionate, or mean character appears.
COME TI MUOVI, SBAGLI (97’, Italy) - International Premiere
Directed by Gianni Di Gregorio. Starring Gianni Di Gregorio, Iaia Forte, Greta Scarano.
Is avoiding all of life’s annoyances and breaking free from every hassle enough to be happy? The seventy-year-old professor (Gianni Di Gregorio) has finally found peace: he has a nice home, a decent pension, friends to joke with, and a lady companion (Iaia Forte, who will be at the festival). He dedicates himself only to pleasant things—until his life turns upside down with the sudden arrival of his daughter (Greta Scarano), who is going through a marital crisis, and two very demanding grandchildren. New worries, new anxieties, but also new affections. Thus begins an adventure into the romantic lives of others and his own, which will help him understand that love is always worth living, even if it brings troubles, sacrifices, and suffering. The film reflects on love and the inexorable human instinct to intertwine one’s destiny with that of others, with all the struggles, joys, and the feeling of truly having lived.
Besides the films in competition mentioned above, the titles selected for this year’s Short Comedy Award, the initiative dedicated to comedic short films, open to directors, actors, and producers ready to tell original and sparkling stories that make the audience reflect through a smile, are:
TÊTES D’ENTERREMENT (15’29”, Belgium) Directed by Nicolas Galoux
It is the story of a man who cannot cry at his mother’s funeral. It is the last straw for this single father, whose modesty and the way others look at him are oppressive. Could it be a refusal of conventions? A bittersweet comedy about letting go.
AQUELE ABRAÇO (18’06”, Portugal) Directed by Michael Joaquim Matias
On a quiet night in the Alentejo countryside, João is preparing to end his life, but his act is interrupted by Ricardo, a stranger with the same intention. Forced to share the same tree, the two men begin an absurd and existential conversation oscillating between the tragic and the ridiculous. A dark comedy about loneliness, the meaning of life, and what happens when everyone talks, but no one listens.
SATURN IN VENUS (5’, Georgia) Directed by Alla Eliseeva
A young woman relaxes on the lakeshore studying the mysteries of astrology. Suddenly, a handsome man appears in the water. Could he be the man promised to her by the stars? Is Saturn about to enter Venus?
ANDROMEDA (15’, Russia) Directed by Anna Melykian
A young woman climbs to the roof of a skyscraper to take her own life but is interrupted by a public service worker with rude language who complains about having to cover a child’s graffiti. No compassion, only sarcasm and provocation. Yet, in this absurdity, a strange desire to live begins to emerge.
The event, in collaboration with EFG Bank (Monaco), has always been held under the High Patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco and the Embassy of Italy. As in previous years, Radio Monte Carlo is the official radio station of the Festival.
