Pubblicata da Legacy Recordings / Sony Music, la raccolta offre una prospettiva illuminante sulla produzione discografica di Elvis negli anni ’70 con ben 89 brani rari, più della metà mai pubblicati negli Stati Uniti, e include rare fotografie d’archivio, nuove note di copertina dello storico musicale Colin Escott e un’introduzione dell’amico di lunga data Jerry Schilling.
L’edizione “highlights” su 2 LP racchiude i brani dei primi due dischi della raccolta.
“Sunset Boulevard” contiene rare versioni alternative in studio di perle come “Separate Ways”, ampiamente considerata la canzone più autobiografica che Elvis abbia mai registrato; “T-R-O-U-B-L-E”, che incanalava lo stile vocale innovativo dei suoi primi anni; e “Burning Love”, il 40º e ultimo singolo della sua carriera entrato nella Top 10.
Un altro brano di grande rilievo è “Always on My Mind”, una delle interpretazioni più emozionanti di Presley negli anni ’70. Benché resa popolare da Willie Nelson un decennio più tardi (e originariamente scritta da Wayne Carson, Johnny Christopher e Mark James), la versione di Elvis cattura la vulnerabilità cruda della canzone con una profondità sorprendente.
I primi due dischi di “Sunset Boulevard” sono pubblicati anche come set autonomo su 2 LP in versione “highlights” con una selezione curata di brani e outtakes. Presentano mix nuovi e mai sentiti, curati dal 4 volte vincitore del GRAMMY Matt Ross-Spang, che ha rimosso tutti gli overdub offrendo nuove e inedite intuizioni. L’apertura con 17 classici incisi nello Studio C della RCA offre uno sguardo intimo su come la voce magnetica di Elvis interagisse con il materiale dei più grandi cantautori dell’epoca, tra cui “For The Good Times” di Kris Kristofferson (un lato B del 1972 pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1995), “Where Do I Go From Here” di Paul Williams (da Elvis del 1973), “I Can Help” di Billy Swan (da Today del 1975) e “And I Love You So” di Don McLean (anch’essa da Today). I mix di Ross-Spang rafforzano anche le 17 outtakes in studio che compongono la seconda parte del set.
Gli ultimi tre dischi della raccolta offrono invece un prezioso sguardo dietro le quinte sulla residency storica di Elvis a Las Vegas, con prove tenute a Los Angeles nel luglio 1970 e nell’agosto 1974 insieme alla sua iconica TCB Band. In queste sessioni Elvis si dona completamente a ogni verso, con nessun altro ad ascoltare se non la sua band e l’ingegnere in sala di controllo, mostrando appieno il suo amore innato per la performance. La chimica naturale con la TCB Band è palpabile anche grazie alla decisione di registrare per la prima volta con una band da tournée in quel periodo.
