Fifty years after 1968, dissatisfaction about universities seems today more widespread than ever. Adapting to the logics of neo-liberalism, higher education has been increasingly absorbed into the commodification of human values that has turned universities into services ranked by students against a value-for-money logic. Besides such commercialisation, or, better, in continuity with it, universities play today a key role in the processes of urban identity, development and regeneration, counting among the largest land owners and as actors involved in real estate operations that threaten to subsume scholarly priorities and hinder teaching and research, the traditional core missions of a modern university.
This discussion aims to investigate the current status of universities by focusing on their spatial and territorial logics and politics, framed by a comparative perspective between Italy and the UK. The starting point will be a presentation of the book Territori della Conoscenza. Un progetto per Cagliari e la sua università (Quodlibet, 2017), which reflects on the state of an average Italian public university in the 21st century. The book focuses on the effects on universities of the Bologna Process – a series of agreements started in 1999 among EU member states for the creation of a common European higher education area which have resulted in the increased mobility, but also precarity, of faculty staff across institutions. It discusses how university architecture should respond to the new conditions under which higher education operates, including the promotion of student-centered learning strategies, the emergence of the figure of the student-entrepreneur, and the development of new kinds of relationships between universities and their host cities.
The event will consider how architecture may be conceived as central to a substantial contemporary redefinition of higher education comparable to that of 1968, when Joseph Rykwert described the new universities of the time as archetypes of combined urban and educational values for their age.

Sabrina Puddu is an architect and visiting lecturer at Leeds Beckett University, Central Saint Martins, and the University of Hertfordshire, and co-founder of urbanaarchitettura. She held a visiting research scholarship at Columbia University and taught at the University of Cagliari between 2009-15. She publishes regularly on magazines and journals, most recently on the architecture of confinement and the urban and rural territorial logics of prisons and penal colonies.
Martino Tattara is a practicing architect and Assistant professor at KU Leuven, Faculty of Architecture. Together with Dogma, his architectural practice, he is working on a research by design trajectory that focuses on domestic space. His writings and projects have appeared in many journals and magazines, and most recently he has co-authored Living and Working (Black Square, 2015) and A room of one’s own (Black Square, 2018).
Francesco Zuddas is Senior Lecturer in Architecture at Anglia Ruskin University. He studied at the University of Cagliari and at the Architectural Association, and he also taught at the AA, Central Saint Martins, and Leeds Beckett University. He is currently writing a book based on his doctoral research on the project of universities in Italy in the 1970s, with the working title The university as settlement principle (Routledge, 2019).
Clare Melhuish is Co-Director of the UCL Urban Laboratory and a Senior Research Associate in the Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment. Since 2013, she has conducted comparative, case study-based research on university-led urban regeneration to inform UCL's plans for the development of a new campus in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (UCL East) and to critique the wider implications of ‘university urbanism’ for the ethical regeneration of cities in an international context. She leads on the Urban Laboratory’s participation in the UCL-University of Gothenburg Centre for Critical Heritage Studies partnership, and is also involved in setting up the new Bartlett Global Centre for Learning Environments as a platform for cross-disciplinary work on space and education.
Davide Deriu is Reader and Director of Architectural Research at the University of Westminster. His research explores issues of experience, perception and representation in architectural culture, and he has published widely on subjects ranging from underground space to aerial photography. Currently, he leads the interdisciplinary project Vertigo in the City, which has received funding from the Wellcome Trust.
