“Grand Finale” di Hofesh Shechter: danza, musica e vitalità distopica all’Opera Ballet Vlaanderen

Sette anni dopo che In Your Rooms è apparso nel nostro programma, la star della coreografia Hofesh Shechter torna all’Opera Ballet Vlaanderen con Grand Finale.

Quando questo capolavoro debuttò in prima mondiale nel 2017, la stampa lo acclamò come “fuochi d’artificio coreografici”. In esclusiva per Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, Shechter reinterpreta questa coreografia intensa ed esuberante per un gruppo più ampio di danzatori.

“Tieniti stretti gli amici e ancora più stretti i tuoi demoni” potrebbe essere un principio guida per l’opera di Shechter. Le sue paure personali spesso diventano fonte di ispirazione per il suo lavoro. È così anche per Grand Finale, produzione di apertura della nuova stagione di danza all’Opera Ballet Vlaanderen. In tempi di disastri climatici e crisi geopolitiche ed economiche, Grand Finale sembra un’opera distopica. Ma al tempo stesso emana un’irrefrenabile vitalità, forza e ottimismo. Per quanto grande sia la tempesta, l’umanità resta in piedi, si innamora, continua a danzare. Sul palco si alternano umorismo e angoscia, proprio come nella vita reale.

Originariamente, Shechter aveva creato questo lavoro per dieci danzatori e con una durata di circa un’ora e mezza. Durante il periodo del Covid, ridusse lo spettacolo a un’ora, ma questa versione non fu mai presentata a un vasto pubblico dal vivo. Oggi, la reinterpreta per quindici danzatori dell’Opera Ballet Vlaanderen.

Per questa produzione, Shechter ha nuovamente composto la musica, intrecciandola con brani di Pëtr Il’ič Čajkovskij e Franz Lehár. La musica viene eseguita dal vivo in scena dall’HERMESensemble. I musicisti incarnano l’ottimismo: proprio come l’orchestra del Titanic, mantengono accesa la fiamma della speranza.

Parte concerto, parte danza, parte teatro – e assolutamente originale: non c’è modo migliore di descrivere Grand Finale. È al tempo stesso comico, cupo e bellissimo. Evoca un mondo in conflitto con se stesso, pieno di energia anarchica e umorismo violento. All’epoca della sua creazione, lo spettacolo collezionò premi e nomination: la rivista tanz lo proclamò “coreografia dell’anno” e ottenne anche una candidatura agli Olivier Awards. Oggi torna in scena interpretato da una delle compagnie più avventurose del nostro tempo.

Seven years after In Your Rooms appeared on our program, star choreographer Hofesh Shechter returns to Opera Ballet Vlaanderen with Grand Finale. When this masterpiece had its world premiere in 2017, the press praised it as “choreographic fireworks.” Exclusively for Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, he reinterprets this intense, exuberant choreography for a larger group of dancers.

 

Keep your friends close and your demons closer could be a guiding principle for Shechter’s oeuvre. His personal fears often serve as a source of inspiration in his work. This is also true for Grand Finale, the opening production of the new dance season at Opera Ballet Vlaanderen. In times of climate disasters and geopolitical and economic crises, Grand Finale seems like a dystopian work. But it also radiates an irrepressible vitality, strength, and optimism. However great the storm may be: humanity keeps standing, falls in love, keeps dancing. Humor and dread alternate on stage, just like in real life.

 

Originally, Shechter created this work for ten dancers and it lasted about one and a half hours. During the Covid period, he shortened the performance to one hour, but this version was never shown to a large live audience. He now reinterprets that version for fifteen dancers of Opera Ballet Vlaanderen.

 

 

For this production, he once again composed the music himself, weaving it together with compositions by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Franz Lehár. The music is performed live on stage by the HERMESensemble. The musicians embody optimism. Just like the orchestra on the Titanic, they keep the flame of hope burning.

 

Part concert, part dance, part theatre, and highly original – there is no better way to describe Grand Finale. It is at once comic, somber, and beautiful. It conjures up a world in conflict with itself, full of anarchic energy and violent humor. At the time, the production gathered awards and nominations one after another. tanz magazine named it “choreography of the year,” and it was also nominated for an Olivier Award. Now, it is danced by one of the most adventurous companies of our time.
