At Cloud Seven in Brussels on the occasion of the PhotoBrussels Festival, we will travel in time and space to the Kinshasa of the 1960's and the 2020's.
In 1960, Congo rejoices in its independence. The days and nights of Kinshasa are seen through the eyes of maverick photographer Jean Depara: nights, clubs, musicians, pretty women, hoodlums, «Bills», bodybuilders.... Three generations apart, the Kinshasa of 2020 is interpreted by Alain Polo Nzuzi, 30, the same age as Depara was then. His poetic universe creates an unexpected framework for today’s disrupted, saturated, chaotic landscape. Two artistic journeys rooted in the unique city of Kinshasa: different sensualities but the same vitality.
The exhibition is curated by Jean-Loup Pivin and Pascal Martin Saint Léon, founders of the iconic Revue Noire who knew Jean Depara and are now the guardians of his memory.
The vernissage is on Saturday 20 January from 14:00 to 20:00 and we will be open the three Saturdays that follow. Over the course of the exhibition, we'll also be hosting a series of events, from serious talks with historians to lively events with musicians. Save the date of Saturday 24 February for an evening of screenings and dancing! Speaking of music, on Saturday 20 January at 20:30, just after our opening, there is a concert at Bozar of Mythique Rumba Congolaise Internationale (MRCI) feat. Ornella Mikwasa. Join us... there are still a few seats available. Hoping you will be able to attend our events, I wish you to be inspired throughout the year.
